Unexpected supermarket launches chunky new chocolate range to rival Tony’s and M&S

From Cadbury to Tony’s Chocolonely, we aren’t exactly short of options when it comes to chocolate products in the UK.

Many supermarkets also have their own sweet ranges, with the Big Daddy from M&S proving popular and Tesco also launching its own treats.

But another retailer is now hoping to rival the likes of these big names with the release of a new own-brand collection.

Morrisons has dropped three bold milk chocolate creations featuring some very unexpected flavours as well as an additional limited-edition ‘seasonal showstopper’.

Known as CHUNK, the new core chocolate selection features one bar with Popping Candy, Rainbow Sprinkle & Chocolate Beans, another that has Pretzels, Caramel, Nougat & Sea Salt, and a third containing Roasted Corn, Biscuit, Honeycomb & Sea Salt.

The fourth and final one is the limited-edition version Blueberry, Raspberry, Cookie and Brownie.

The chunky chocolate bars cost £2.50 each and are available to purchase in-store and online as of right now.

Speaking about the launch, Lizzy Massey, the director of own-brand at Morrisons, said: ‘Our new collection has been developed to create excitement and indulgence in every bite, featuring a mouthwatering pairing of smooth milk chocolate infused with an assortment of delicious ingredients for playful textures and irresistible flavours.

‘This new range gives our customers a bold, fun and affordable way to enjoy the kind of chocolate bar that everyone’s talking about.’

What did Metro make of Morrisons new chocolate bars?

Morrisons isn’t a supermarket I frequent, as there isn’t a store local to me, but I know the retailer is often underestimated when it comes to its food.

Each Valentine’s Day, Morrisons cracks it out of the park with its meal deal offering and ends up ranking quite highly in our taste tests.

So I was optimistic when trying these new chocolate bars – and they certainly did surprise me.

Yes, they’re very obviously an attempt to compete with big brands like Tony’s, with strikingly similar packaging, branding and chunks.

However, points definitely have to be given to Mozzas for the creativity that’s gone into these flavours. I haven’t seen anyone else putting roasted corn in chocolate, but you know what? IT WORKS.

I loved how the savoury kick from the corn balanced out the sweet milk chocolate. That bar is definitely something a little different and fun. My only complaint is that the salt ratios are a bit off, if you eat too much, it’s far too salty – but I suppose that’s one way to stop you polishing off the lot in one go!

I was also stunned by how much I enjoyed the blueberry and raspberry bar, the fruit flavours were definitely quite artificial but just the right side of being too much. It’s got a blueberry muffin taste to it, with little jelly fruit pieces that reminded me a bit of Cadbury’s Marvellous creations. If you’ve got a sweet tooth this is definitely the one for you.

At the other end of the scale, I’d expected the Rainbow Sprinkle bar to be my firm favourite as I can’t resist anything with sprinkles and popping candy, but it was actually just a bit dull. The candy barely fizzled in my mouth and there wasn’t very much flavour.

And don’t even get me started on the Pretzel one… Despite sounding the most appealing, it was, in fact, the least. I had one bite and felt my entire face scrunch up in disgust.

The caramel flavour was overwhelmingly sweet, but in a very chemical-y way. Some people will enjoy it, but it definitely wasn’t for me.

Overall, verdict…

While the chocolate itself isn’t quite as high quality as that from Tony’s or M&S, these Morrisons bars still (mostly) worth a try if you spot them on the shelves. The inclusions are quirky and just generally quite good fun.
