Christmas has come early for McDonald’s fans.

The fast food chain has exclusively revealed to Metro that a beloved burger, one that is often hailed ‘the best ever’ and ‘better than a Big Mac’ is returning to the menu.

Yes, that’s right… the Big Tasty is coming back for the festive season.

And what’s more, it’s had a bit of a makeover while it’s been away, so customers can now get that iconic smoky flavour, with more choice.

For the first time ever, burger lovers in the UK can order the Big Tasty as a single or a double, and in both those patties have been upgraded to a quarter pounder size.

You’ll also be able to decide whether you want to add bacon onto your Big Tasty, or keep it as it is.

And there are a few other changes, including the emmental cheese being swapped out for white cheddar.

The square lettuce slices have also been replaced with shredded lettuce and there’s a new toasted quarter pounder bun, to make sure everything fits inside.

So, put that all together and what do you have?

A single Big Tasty features a British and Irish beef quarter pounder patty, two slices of white cheddar cheese, lettuce, onions, tomato and Big Tasty sauce, all inside a toasted sesame-topped bun.

Those ordering a double will then get an extra patty as well as an additional third slice of cheese.

Speaking about the Big Tasty’s return, Thomas O’Neill, the head of menu at McDonald’s UK&I, told Metro: ‘The Big Tasty has always been about bold, craveable flavour – and this year we’ve taken it up a notch.

‘It’s still about that unique, smoky sauce fans know and love, but now with more ways to enjoy it. And no matter how you have it, each Big Tasty is crafted with even more flavour in mind – from the 100% British and Irish quarter pounder beef patty, to the ruch, creamy white cheddar cheese, every bite is packed with serious flavour satisfaction.’

The Big Tasty and Double Big Tasty will be joining McDonald’s Christmas line-up coming later this month, priced at £7.99 for a Big Tasty Meal and £9.49 for a Double Big Tasty Meal. The bacon add-on is charged at an extra 90p and delivery prices are higher.

The full McDonald’s festive menu to be revealed very soon. Watch this space for more details…

Also new on the McDonald’s menu for Christmas…

If this news weren’t enough, McDonald’s has also just unveiled a brand new Happy Meal for Christmas, featuring Mayo Chicken and The Elf on the Shelf.

There are 12 plush Santaverse character toys to collect, or a book featuring The Elf on the Shelf.

Little ones can also order ‘reindeer treats’, with carrot sticks getting a makeover for the holidays.

And there are other surprises in store, with character visits, face painting and themed activity pages to celebrate Christmas.

The new Happy Meal arrives on November 19, but only for a limited time.

This comes after McDonald’s rolled out its new ordering system across the UK.

Following a successful trial in London, customers across the UK can now access the new ‘Order Ahead’ feature on the McDonald’s App.

Effectively allowing you to queue-jump, it uses special technology to let your local outlet know when you’re close by so they can start prepping your food.

Order Ahead uses geofencing technology, which is location-based tech that creates boundaries on a virtual map. As such, you’ll need to consent to sharing your location in order to use it.

Are you excited for the return of the Big Tasty?

You place your order and pay via the app before you leave your location – be it home or the office – and then make your way over to get your food.

When your phone enters the boundary, an alert is sent to the restaurant so they can prepare your order as you approach and time it just right, so it’s ready for your arrival.

According to McDonald’s, your food will only start cooking when you are approximately three minutes away from the restaurant.

However, it’s worth noting that it’s not available for Drive-Thru orders, in case you were hoping to shave a few minutes off your wait while you’re still on the motorway.
